General Information

Rasht is the capital city of Gilan Province, Iran. As of the 24 October 2011 census, its population was 639,951.

Based on Wikipedia, Rasht is the largest city on Iran's Caspian Sea coast. It is a major trade center between Caucasia, Russia and Iran using the port of Bandar-e Anzali. Rasht is also a major tourist center with the resort of Masouleh in the adjacent mountains and the beaches of Caspian as some of the major attractions.

Rasht has made it into UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network for its gastronomy (the practice or art of choosing, cooking, and eating good food). Itis now among 47 cities from 33 countries that are part of the network in seven creative fields — crafts and folk art, design, film, gastronomy, literature, media arts and music.

Historically, Rasht was a major transport and business center which connected Iran to Russia and Europe, and because of this was known as the "Gate of Europe". The city has a history that goes back to the 13th century but its modern history dates back to the Safavid era during which Rasht was a major silk trade center with numerous textile workshops.

Get in and around

There are a few daily flights from and to Tehran. Also there is a weekly flight from and to Isfahan. Most of these depart either early in the morning or late afternoon.

Well connected to highways from Tehran-Qazvin. You can use taxi, however the easiest way to travel is via a hired car and its not expencive.

Like everywhere in Iran, Rasht is well connected with Tehran and neighboring towns by bus. Argentine and Azadi Terminals are two main bus stations in Tehran which connect the capital to Rasht. There are several buses all day long.

When to visit?

The most popular time to visit is spring and late summer. The climate here is mild, and generally warm and temperate. The is a great deal of rainfall in Rasht, even in the driest month. The average annual temperature is 15.8 °C in Rasht. About 1359 mm of precipitation falls annually. Precipitation is the lowest in July, with an average of 41 mm. The greatest amount of precipitation occurs in October, with an average of 236 mm. At an average temperature of 24.7 °C, August is the hottest month of the year. The lowest average temperatures in the year occur in February, when it is around 7.1 °C. Between the driest and wettest months, the difference in precipitation is 195 mm. The variation in temperatures throughout the year is 17.6 °C.
