General Information

Birjand is the east Iranian provincial capital of South Khorasan and the centre of the county Birjand resp. It known for its saffron, barberry, rug and handmade carpet exports. The city of Birjand had a population of 187,020 people at the time of the last official census in 2013.

Being close to the Afghanistan border, Birjand is located on the "Silk Road" of opium smuggled from Afghanistan on the way to Europe (also dubbed the "opium crescent").

Based on Wikipedia, the city has a dry climate with significant difference between day and night temperatures. It is a fast-growing city, thus becoming one of the major centres in the East of Iran

Get in and around

The airport located in the north of the city. There are daily flight from / to Tehran and some major cities.

Connected to freeways. You can use taxi, however the easiest way to travel is via a hired car and its not expencive.

There are plenty of scheduled bus services from some major cities.

When to visit?

The best time to visit Birjand will be when the average temperatures are at a comfortable level between 20°C and 30°C on average, which is during months May, June, July, August and September. Other great months to visit Birjand are March, April, October and November when the average temperatures are a little cooler but still between a pleasant 10°C and 20°C.  Birjand is considered to have a desert climate. In Birjand, there is virtually no rainfall during the year. The average annual temperature in Birjand is 17.0 °C. The average annual rainfall is 129 mm.
