
General Information
Astara is a city in and the capital of Astara County, Gilan Province in Iran. At the 2011 census, its population was 86,757 in 25,192 families. It lies on the border with Azerbaijan Republic and on the Caspian Sea. It is a relatively important border trade center between Iran and the Caucasus. Astara has a humid subtropical climate with cold, wet winters and hot, humid summers.
An extension of the Qazvin line over Resht to reach Astara is planned to connect the Iranian railway network to the Azerbaijan broad gauge railway along the shore of the Caspian sea headed north.
Get in and around
The closest major airport to Astara is Ardabil and then Rasht Airport.
There are two main road from Ardabil and from Anzali. You can use taxi, however the easiest way to travel is via a hired car and its not expencive.
There are plenty of scheduled bus services from and to Ardabil and Anzali.

When to visit?
The most popular time to visit is during the spring (Apr–May) and end of the summer. In Astara, the summers are warm, muggy, dry, and clear and the winters are long, very cold, and partly cloudy. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 35°F to 86°F and is rarely below 28°F or above 92°F.
